2008-02-05 Advisory Meeting

Meeting Date:  Tuesday February 5, 2008
Location:         Olive Garden in Mechanicsburg
Attendees:       Bill; Ryan; Joe; Cathy; Rick

Discussion Topics:

-   Replacements for Jim's position

  • No one officially sent in a request

-   Swag & Goodies for meetings:

  • Joe kept in contact with the people from MyEclipse and they committed to giving away more free licenses.  We'll offer them as prizes periodically
  • Ryan & Bill are working with Atlassian (Jira / Confluence vendor) to get sponsorship from them.  They offer t-shirts, mugs, etc. as promotional material to user groups.  http://confluence.atlassian.com/display/UGS/Atlassian+User+Group+Sponsorship
  • Do we still want to look into the book swag that was offered to us a couple months ago?  [I don't recall that many Java books to choose from.]

Possible presentation topcs:

Tentative Schedule:

  • February  "Netbeans 6.0"  Stroud Custer
  • March  "Esper"  (Someone from Versatile?)
  • April   Open Space Session
  • May  "Deppen"  (Bill & Ryan)

Other off-topic discussions:

  • Apache's Directory Server - It has a powerful LDAP browser & LDAP editor.  As good as or better than any commercial product.

  • Consolidate your news feeds by using Google Reader.  www.google.com/reader
  • Storing photos off-site using SmugMug.   www.smugmug.com
  • Off-site storage / backups using Amazon's S3 and Jungle Disk.  Storage is billed based upon the number of GB that you're using.  Amazon manages the disk space.  Jungle Disk provides an easy way to get to the storage by mapping it as a Windows disk.  Jungle disk also encrypts that data so that no one else can use/view it.  http://www.jungledisk.com/
  • Check out the Atlassian Developer Blog  (or add it to your Google Reader list)
